Fellow participant Claudine Pang, 38, who went on the trip with her husband and two children, aged two and five, said the trip allowed her to spend time with her family and give back to the community.

The ophthalmologist, who wants to make these trips a regular family affair, is also hoping to conduct eye tests for students in less developed countries in the future.

“Giving money is one thing, but it is different from being present and spending the time and effort to help people,” she said.
